Previously, it was difficult to send small packages as letters, as they were not traceable. However, with RFID technology in the freight label, it is now possible to track parcels sent as letters at equal footing with larger parcels. In the following, the web shop Hatstore.se tells about the advantages of using RFID freight labels.
From the warehouse outside of Kalmar, Southern Sweden, Hatstore Scandinavia AB have supplied customers all over Europe with caps and hats since 2011. In November 2016, they started to send small parcels to Norway with RFID labels using Bring’s product ”Pakke i Postkassen” [packages in the mailbox]. With ”Pakke i Postkassen” the parcel is delivered to the customer’s mailbox and with RFID the consignor has full traceability all the way to final delivery.
“We chose RFID to enable us to send parcels faster and on time, and, as opposed to previously, be able to track & trace our small parcels. The customers feel involved in the shipping process and can track their deliveries all the way”, says Filip Klasson, Vice President at Hatstore Scandinavia AB and continues:
“A RFID printer and labels with RFID microchips are more expensive than normal label printers and labels, but it is worth the investment.”
Hatstore prints RFID labels via Consignor Ticket, a web based version of the delivery management software Consignor. Through Consignor, Hatstore is able to book and print all shipments in just one system, no matter how many carriers they use. In Consignor, Hatstore is also able to track their shipments and send notifications to customers to let them know that their delivery is on its way.
This is how Hatstore uses RFID and Consignor
“Consignor Ticket was integrated into Hatstore’s web shop system, so that the communication between the customer’s system and Consignor ticket and back to the printer happened automatically. That way, our customers gets automatic delivery management through our web based solution,” explains Carl-Henrik Hällöf, Country Manager at Consignor AB.

The improvement is also felt in Hatstore’s Customer Service Department.
“Issues concerning tracking of parcels has dropped from around 10 per day to just one,” says Dardan Drini, Customer Service Responsible, and continues:
“In the few cases where a customer calls in to enquire about a delivery, we can find the parcel in Consignor Portal using order number, name of the receiver or phone number.”
Consignor Portal is a service included in all Consignor solutions. Consignor Portal is updated continuously with track & trace information from carriers, enabling Hatstore to trace their packages. Hatstore recently activated notification emails for their customers through the Mailback function in Consignor. That way, customers receive an email with a tracking link and are able to check the status of their delivery.
Warehouse Manager at Hatstore, Joel Lindskog, concludes:
“In addition, RFID labels are smaller and better suited for our small packages.”
Facts about RFID
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification and is a wireless technology which through electromagnetic fields transfers data and makes it possible to identify and trace objects. When it comes to delivery, it is possible to put a RFID chip into the freight label. When the parcel gets close to a RFID scanner at the carrier, the chip in the label is registered automatically and updated wirelessly with EDI-data on the shipment. That way, the carrier does not have to scan the parcel manually. When a RFDI label has been scanned, the carrier is able to ad events to the shipment, eg. Send an email or text message with “Your package has been shipped” and send a notification to the customer at the same time.
